Meet Kristie Heredia- Volunteer Social Media Assistant
When I first joined the Toya Tuff Foundation as an intern, I knew how deeply it would resonate with my personal journey. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, my family and I moved to Florida when I was around 12 years old. We made this move to ensure a better life for my younger brother, who has Down Syndrome. Growing up alongside him, I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. This experience ignited a passion in me—a drive to advocate for those like my brother and to make a meaningful impact in their lives.
At the TOYA TUFF Foundation, I found a community that shares this passion. The organization’s mission to support families and caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities through education, resources, and programs aligns perfectly with my own aspirations. Through their TOYA TUFF giving program, they provide essential items to children and adults with cerebral palsy, helping them lead fulfilling, comfortable, and dignified lives. This not only eases financial burdens for their families but also empowers the individuals themselves—a cause that is incredibly close to my heart.
My time at TOYA TUFF began as an internship, where I had the opportunity to manage social media and assist with various logistical tasks. But it quickly became much more than just a role. I realized how much this work meant to me. I love being part of an organization that genuinely cares about the well-being of individuals with disabilities and their families. The experience has been deeply rewarding, allowing me to contribute to a cause that mirrors my own goals in life.
My ultimate dream is to open a nonprofit organization that supports families and individuals with IDD, just like TOYA TUFF does. I envision a center that provides all the necessary resources—from teaching independence skills to offering occupational therapy, speech therapy, and more. I know the struggles my family faced, and I want to help others navigate their journeys with greater ease and support.
In addition to my work with TOYA TUFF, I am also pursuing a career in law. I am currently in the process of applying to law school, with a focus on nonprofit law and special education law. I believe that understanding the legal system will provide me with the necessary tools to effectively advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families.
The TOYA TUFF Foundation has been an incredible learning experience for me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an amazing organization. Their dedication to empowering individuals with developmental disabilities and supporting their families has reinforced my commitment to my own mission. Together, we are working toward a world where every individual with IDD can lead a fulfilling, independent life, surrounded by the support they need to thrive.
